Signet rings come with a long and complex history. They date back from 3500 BCE and they are one of the oldest types of jewelry. These types of rings feature a flat surface that is either engraved or embossed, although plain signet-style rings are also widely available on the market. Their name originates from the Latin ‘signum’, which means ‘sign’. Pharaohs and religious leaders were the first wearers of signet rings, which were marked with various emblems and family crests. Moreover, these types of rings were used as personal seals when authenticating documents.
